Calculating Payment for Partial Quarter

The following examples show how to calculate partial payments for academic employees based on teaching days. 

For academic salary administration policy, see the Academic Personnel Manual, Section 600.

Examples:

The two academic employees in the examples below are hired at 50% time.

2 Determine days employee worked Sept. = 6; Oct. = 23; Nov. = 20, Dec. = 10
Total days worked: 59
3 Calculate quarterly rate
(annual rate) ÷ (teaching quarters) = (quarterly rate)
$26,136.00 ÷ 3 = $8,712.00
4 Calculate daily rate
(quarterly rate) ÷ (teaching days in qtr) = (daily rate)
$8,712.00 ÷ 60 = $145.20
5 Calculate payment for partial quarter service
(daily rate) × (percentage of appt.) × (days worked) = (payment)
$145.20 × 0.50 × 59 = $4,283.40

1 Calculate total months to be paid, as though the employee worked the entire quarter
(% appt.) × (months in qtr) = (months of pay)

2 Get percentage of days worked
(days worked) ÷ (teaching days) = % days
59 ÷ 60 = 0.9833 59 ÷ 60 = 0.9833
3 Calculate total percentage to be paid for quarter

1.50 × 0.9833 = 1.4750 * 2.00 × 0.9833 = 1.9666 **
4 Calculate total quarter pay
(step 3 result) × (pay rate)
1.4750 × $2,904.00 = $4,283.40 1.9666 × $2,178.00 = $4,283.25
(note difference due to rounding)

* For 09/09 appointments, their quarter is three months. Two of the months will be paid at the normal rate, with the difference of 0.4750 to be paid on the month that they did not work the full schedule.

** For appointees with a basis paid of 09/12, their "quarter" is composed of four months. Three of the months of their quarter will be paid at the normal rate, with the difference of 0.4666 to be paid in the month they did not work the full schedule.
