Upcoming DESII changes
August 14, 2025
Budget and Institutional Analysis (BIA) has launched a project to sunset the Data Editing System for Instructional Information (DESII) and transition all instructional data collection to Banner, as the single system of record. A Tableau-based platform will replace SIS-DS reports, providing a modern, sustainable reporting solution that better meets campus needs and offers potential new data insights. It is our intent that these changes will be fully operational by Academic Year 2026-27.
Why This Change Is Important
DESII has long supported reporting on instructional activities (SIS-DS reports) by housing instructional information, including but not limited to course locations, weekly student hours, instructors of record, teaching assistants (TAs), and course sections. However, maintaining two systems creates duplication of effort and potential discrepancies. Transitioning to Banner as the sole source system will:
- Eliminate inconsistencies due to the use of two systems
- Eliminate redundant data entry and data editing by department staff to ensure more timely data availability.
Upcoming Changes and Timeline
· Fall 2025: Changes to Banner will be implemented prior to the end of instruction in early December.
· Spring 2026: Tableau-based reporting platform will replace SIS-DS reports.
· Summer 2026: DESII editing processes will end and all instructional data will be captured in Banner. More information on this change and process for ensuring that data is entered into Banner will be shared in the coming months. I will note that in earlier conversations about this planned change we had hoped to end the DESII editing efforts sooner, however, we have determined that it is best that they continue through the 2025-26 academic year.
Enhancements to Support Transition
While the current Banner deployment is already capable of housing most instructional data, modifications are underway to support the association of TAs with courses, a gap that has historically been filled by DESII. Once implemented, Banner will fully support these business processes and serve as the single system of record for instructional data, eliminating the need for DESII and its associated editing process.
Action Requested
Please share any specific concerns or questions about this transition with us. Additionally, if your units rely on DESII data for reports or processes beyond the SIS-DS reports and you believe there are data dependencies that will be impacted by this change, please contact us to collaborate on a solution.
Thank you
Team members from schools and colleges have already been involved in requirements gathering efforts for the future state reporting. We appreciate your engagement in this effort and value the guidance, feedback, and participation.
