Different types of student fees

The following are the different types of Student Fees:

Systemwide Fees: Approved by the Regents

  • Tuition (formerly Educational Fee)
  • Student Services Fees (formerly Registration Fees)
  • Professional Degree Supplemental Tuition (formerly Professional School Fee)

Campus-based Fees: Approved by referendum, UC Davis Chancellor or Regents

  • ASUCD
  • Memorial Union Fee
  • Health Insurance (SHIP)
  • Course Materials and Service Fee
  • Summer Session - Unit Fee (Regent is the approval authority)
  • For more information on all student fees, please visit the Tuition and Fees page.

Student Fees are appropriated in the following ways:

  • The Budget Office, Financial Aid Office or the Student Affairs Vice Chancellor's Office create a KFS BA document to allocate educational fees, Student Services Fee and student referendum fees.
  • Course material fees and professional fees are managed by the dean's office or department. The authority to spend is based on the actual revenue generated, not by the budget (which is an estimate of revenues and expenses).

Student fee funds are in Sub Fund Group Type (SFGT) T and are in fund numbers "2XXXX".  More detailed information is available on the Tuition and Fees pages.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Can I use summer session funds for research?
  • Per Office of the President guidance, units are encouraged to compensate instructors with salary instead of deposits to Academic Enrichment Accounts (formerly called research accounts). As a practice, it is best to use summer sessions fees for instruction rather than research.
